Native Features, face #5

I have been waiting for a chance to practise drawing real models on coloured paper! This work took some time but I enjoyed the process.

The model is from a photograph of Edward S. Curtis taken around 1900.
I found the photograph from a collection of the Library of Congress, that kindly offers digitalized historical collections for public access.

Mielessäni on ollut monesti ajatus tehdä kasvot mallista värilliselle paperille. Tähän piti varata aikaa, mutta mihinpä mukavaan tekemiseen ei pitäisi... :)

Valokuva, jota käytin mallina, oli amerikkalaisesta historiallisesta kokoelmasta, jota ylläpitää verkossa Library of Congress. Yleisölle avoimet sivut tarjoavat monenlaisia dokumentteja vaikkapa Amerikan alkuperäiskansoista.

I used metallic pencils on medium brown drawing paper. That added some challenge! Some pencils were not visible on this paper so I used only two colours. Dark red was good for shadows. For highlights I used yellow, that actually reflects light on a right angle. The result is interesting as the picture looks different depending on where I stand.

Kokeilunhaluisena tein tämän metallivärikynillä ruskealle paperille. Osa väreistä ei erottunut taustaväristä, mikä rajasi vaihtoehtoja. Varjoihin käytin punaista kynää, huippuvaloihin taas keltaista. Jälkimmäinen heijastaa valoa etenkin tietyssä kulmassa, joten lopputulos on aika jännä.

Ja tietysti kasvot ovat mukana myös Teemakuussa. :)

Hopeful Faces (3 & 4)

Today I post two faces to ease up tomorrow's schedule. I really don't want to be late from my favourite dance lesson... (tribal fusion belly dance ♥)

Tässä yhdellä kertaa kahdet kasvot, jotta en huomenna myöhästyisi viikon kohokohdasta, vatsatanssitunniltani. ;)

The third face I call Feathers of Hope. I wanted to present my hopeful mood in this digital drawing. I rarely draw anything this simplified but this style fit to my theme.

Tässä samalla Teemakuuhun 2. kasvot. Nimesin tämän Toivon höyheniksi, sillä halusin tässä antaa toiveikkuudelleni ilmeen. Teen harvoin näin pelkistettyjä kuvia, mutta tämä syntyi helposti fiilispohjalta. :)

#4 face also makes me think hope... Apparently this subject is now important to me. :) I finished this digital drawing over a week ago, but it goes well for 29 faces challenge.

Ilmeisesti tämä aihe on minulle nyt tärkeä, koska myös näissä kasvoissa on toivo läsnä. :) Viimeistelin tämän digipiirroksen jo reilu viikko sitten, mutten tullut laittaneeksi sitä esiin minnekään ennen tätä.

A Face for Two Challenges

Here is the second face for the 29 faces challenge as well the first one for Teemakuu-challenge.

Tässä toiset kasvot 29 faces -haasteeseen. Samalla otan tällä työllä osaa Teemakuun 9 kasvot -haasteeseen. Jälkimmäinen haaste olikin minulle uusi tuttavuus. Jäin miettimään yhtä kysymystä: Voiko Teemakuuhun osallistua myös itse tehdyllä digipiirroksella vai tulisiko työt tehdä perinteisesti käsin?

Teemakuu 1/9: Our Moment / Hetki yhdessä
Kuvan kasvot saivat alkunsa, kun katselin teemukiani, ja ajattelin piirtää siinä olevan muumihahmon ihmismäisemmäksi. Alun perin Runoilijana tunnettu hahmo muuttui luonnosten välissä maalariksi, ja seurakin vaihtui Niiskuneidistä hiljaisen erämökin kissaneidiksi.

1st of February means start of 29 Faces challenge! This will be third time I take part.

I have quite recently started to draw with the application found from my tablet. This year my faces are often digitally drawn. :) Hope you'll like them!

Vivid Details from Forest

I keep finding the most amazing details when walking through forest. The branches seem to form patterns that are intriguing, when against the light sky. Tree bark has beautiful, vivid shades that I love. The variation of trees makes them my favourites. :)

Walking in nature is one of my top hobbies right now. :) I'm looking forward to Spring, when there will be more light here in northern hemisphere. That means I can get better photos with my compact camera. ;)

Metsäkävelyistä on tullut suosikkiharrastukseni viime viikoina. :) Nautin, kun löydän visuaalisesti upeita yksityiskohtia kaikkialta ympäriltäni.
Metsässä erityisesti puut ovat monella tapaa suosikkejani. Oksiston muodostamat kuviot ovat yleensä valoa vasten aivan mahdottoman hienoja, mutta myös kaarnassa löytyy kiehtovia rakenteita ja sävyjä.
Odottelen kevättä, jotta valon määrä kasvaisi. Digipokkarillani saa nyt hyviä kuvia vain keskipäivällä, jos pilviverho ei ole sakea. Oikeaan suuntaan ollaan onneksi menossa. ;)

I progress in using digital pen as a art medium. It's easy for me to start drawing a face - and lately that has lead to these outcomes:

I also found myself drawing my favourite animals, bunnies. :)
The more furry one was very hard to get done...

City Dweller in Forest

What I most enjoy in my new neighbourhood is nature. It really is something else compared to the parks I took walks in the last place I lived. Now, no parks but forest! ♥

I feel grateful and humbled being able to smell, see and hear all the life around the woods. And it's all just 10 minutes away from my home. :) I wish I could present here the smell of pine trees, the scent of ground in warm days and all those tiny details...

Uudessa asuinpaikassani on parasta lähimetsä. :) Olen kertonut siitä lähes kaikille, jotka tapaan. Entisten puistokävelyiden sijaan pääsen nyt ihan oikeaan metsään kymmenessä minuutissa!

Metsässä kävellessä kaikki aistit kertovat jotain mielenkiintoista. Ja koska hajuaistini parani marraskuussa tehdyn poskionteloiden operaation jälkeen, metsän tuoksu on parasta, mitä voin kokea. :) Voi kun sen tuoksunkin saisi tänne blogiin kuvien oheen...
